70th Annual Panhandle Kennel Club AKC Dog Show

The 70th Annual Panhandle Kennel Club AKC Dog Show starts today through September 16th.(ABC 7 Amarillo-photo-Darra Cunningham)

Today is the first day of the 70th Annual Panhandle Kennel Club AKC Dog Show.

Six hundred dogs are here from all across the country to compete.

All dogs will be judged on confirmation which is how closely they meet the breed standard.

They will also be judged on obedience, how good they follow directions and commands.

Vendors will be there selling all kinds of dog products like crates and shampoo.

There is also blankets and beds available for specific breeds.

Junior competitor, Melony Lopez chose to the Amarillo AKC show as her last stop before she turns 18.

"It's something that I love to do. I supported my breed as a junior and it makes me happy to know that I came this far.

They're one in a million. Everybody is and we all ave one thing in common, we love dogs," said Lopez.

After this weekend Lopez will no longer be able to compete at the junior level.

This event is until Sunday September 16th from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and it is free to attend.
