Canyon girls basketball coach to be honored Tuesday
Do what you love, and you will never work another day in your life. A statement many aspire to – but never experience. But for Lady Eagle head basketball coach Joe Lombard, the statement has always rung true.
"It is my life," said Lombard. "And my job has always been a passion. And coaching has always been a passion, working with young people has been a passion."
Canyon ISD is honoring Lombard by naming the basketball court after hi, and placing a plaque in the gym in honor of his dedication.
"It's humbling and i feel undeserving. I just feel like I'm doing my job. I don't feel like I'm special in any way. It's the greatest honor I've ever had as far as a coaching honor."
Lombard has coached thousands of Canyon students in his tenure, and led Panhandle teams to 19 state championships. Lombard loves to win - but developing kids into young adults through athletics is the most important part of his job.
"I think they've had a bigger impact on me than me on them. Because I know my life has changed as I've gone through 40 years of coaching."
And over 1300 wins later – Lombard still has his priorities in order.
"For sure my philosophy is God is first, family is second, and that Lady Eagle Basketball is third, in that order. But, it's a close third."
