BOLIVAR PENINSULA, Texas (KFDM) - A shark bit a 42-year-old man at about 10 a.m. Thursday near the Bolivar Peninsula on the Texas coast, KFDM/Fox 4 confirmed.

The man was bitten just above the knee on his right leg.

He is in stable condition at the hospital.

Local authorities say the man was swimming near a sandbar when the shark bit him.

The man swam to shore and was treated before he was taken to the hospital.

"There are plenty of sharks off the coast," authorities told KFDM/Fox 4, "but a bite or attack is rare. Usually, they're black tipped sharks, a smaller shark."
