The family of a woman Amarillo police said was killed by her ex-boyfriend broke down in tears Friday when they talked publicly for the first time.

“She was my granddaughter, but she was also my best friend,” said Charles Curfman, Shereena's grandfather.

Police responded to Shereena’s home around 5 a.m. Thursday where they found her dead.

According to police, she was shot multiple times by her ex-boyfriend, Erik Rivas.

“She was a loving, caring person who didn’t deserve something like this,” said Christina Holman, one of Shereena’s three sisters.

Shereena spent the last 10 years teaching 3rd and 4th grade math at Oak Dale Elementary.

“Her students were always her number one priority," said Holman. "You knew if she could take them all home and love them as her own, she would."

ABC 7 received numerous comments on Facebook from Shereena's former students and their parents who said she was a great teacher.

One person even said she was the best teacher they ever had.

“That was her dream and she achieved it," said Shannen Caballero, her sister. "She wanted more, so she went and got her masters, because that’s how smart she was and how intelligent she was."

After finishing her master's degree, Shereena took a position at the Region 16 Education Service Center. Unfortunately, that career was cut short.

Shereena's family said she will live on through her daughter.

“Every time she opens her mouth, I think of my sister because she’s just like her. Smart, intelligent, and beautiful,” Cabellero said.

The family said Shereena wanted nothing but the best for her daughter and they are going to do everything in their power to make sure that happens.

“She could not have a better dad. So, I can tell you and I can vouch for him, he will always, always, be there for whatever that little girl needs,” said Kenneth Holman, Shereena's brother-in-law.
