The Texas Department of Transportation's historic preservation program is partnering with the Don Harrington Discovery Center to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the discovery of helium and the historic Amarillo Helium Plant.

On Sept. 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., items from a 50-year time capsule will be revealed and on display during a family-friendly event at DHDC.

In Amarillo, TxDOT is planning improvements to State Loop 335 that require a portion of land from the Amarillo Helium Plant property. Since the Helium Plant is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, TxDOT is looking to capture the history of the property from the retirees.

TxDOT historians and volunteers will be on hand to capture memories, photographs, documents and other memorabilia related to the historic Amarillo Helium Plant and will document and return all original materials at this event.

TxDOT goes Beyond the Road to share history along the highway in communities all over Texas. That's why the public's help is needed to ensure the Helium Plant's story and significance is preserved for years to come.
