SWAT on scene of standoff on South Bonham

UPDATE: 3:11 p.m.

The Amarillo Police Department has released more information on the standoff on South Bonham.

According to police, officers were called to the 5100 block of S. Bonham St. on a possible burglary in progress. The caller said two males armed with firearms were attempting to enter a residence.

Officers saw an open back door on the residence, which was closed as they approached.

Due to the nature of the call, the APD Critical Response Team was called to assist.

At this time, traffic is being blocked from the 5100 block of S. Bonham and on Douglass Street from Leigh to Crockett. Drivers are asked to avoid the area.

APD says it will provide updates as the incident progresses.

UPDATE: 1:40 p.m.

The Randall County Sheriff's Office's SWAT vehicle has arrived on the scene.

They are staging in the alley to the east of residence involved, according to authorities.

No further information has been released at this time.


Amarillo's SWAT team currently is on the scene of a standoff in the 5100 Block of South Bonham Street.

Officers were called to the Bonham address on a burglary-in-progress call, APD information officer Cpl. Jeb Hilton said.

When officers arrived, someone inside the house shut the door and started closing the blinds, Hilton said.

Officers were able to learn that some people inside the house were the subject of outstanding warrants, Hilton said.

A standoff ensued.

Hilton urged residents in the area to shelter in place, no go outside and to stay away from doors and windows.
