A 3-year-old boy accidentally shot himself after finding a gun in a holster on his mother's bed, said police.

The mother told officers she woke up to the sound of a gunshot at about 8 a.m. on Wednesday at her mobile home in the Northwest Trails Community, located along Loop 1604 and Liberty Field.

She found her son had a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was taken to University Hospital where he underwent surgery and was listed in critical condition. The mother and another young child were taken to the hospital to be with the young boy. As of Thursday afternoon, police said he remained in critical condition.

Investigators said the gun, which was in a holster hanging off the bed frame, belongs to the mother's boyfriend. He was at work at the time of the shooting.

Police believe the child accidentally shot himself. The tragic incident remained under investigation.
