AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — One man is dead after a head on collision early Saturday morning in Amarillo.
Amarillo police officers were dispatched to the 3700-block of southbound IH-27 around 2 a.m. on Saturday.
Officials said a silver Mercedes Sedan had been traveling northbound in the southbound lanes when the car struck at 2004 Ford Taurus.
The department said a preliminary investigation revealed the Mercedes was involved in a hit and run crash at 53rd and South Western St. prior to this accident.
The Mercedes, driven by 28-year-old Robert Bichsel, fled the scene after the hit and run, according to authorities.
While fleeing from the hit and run, Bichsel entered I-27 going northbound on the wrong side of the road until he collided with the Taurus, driven by 62-year-old Debra Goodrich.
Goodrich was taken to a local area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Her passenger, 63-year-old Pedro Bernal, was also transported to a local area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Authorities said Bichsel was taken to a local hospital where he died of injuries received in the collision.
APD said alcohol and speed are factors in the crash.
The incident is being investigated by the Traffic Investigation Squad of the Amarillo Police Department.
