Man dies from injuries after motorcycle race crash

45-year-old Sammy DeLeon dies from injuries.

Justice of the Peace Hermann has ordered an autopsy. Next of kin was notified.


On August 9 at around 10:30 p.m., Officers were sent to the Northeast 19th Ave and North Manhattan Street about a crash involving two motorcycles.

According to the Amarillo Police Department, "a male, age 45, had been westbound on Northeast 19th approaching North Manhattan on a black Honda Motorcycle. Racing him westbound on Northeast 19th , was Stephen Lee Philpot II, male, age 31, on a white/red Yamaha Motorcycle. The Yamaha and the Honda collided. The driver of the Honda was thrown off of his motorcycle."

The motorcyclist was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries. Philpot was attempting to flee the scene but was captured and arrested.

Philpot was in possession of Marijuana an THC wax and was later sent to the Potter County Sheriff's Office for racing causing serious bodily injury possess ion of marijuana and possession of controlled substance.

The Traffic Investigation Squad of the Amarillo Police Department are investigating this incident.
