American Idol has been renewed for it's 17th season and although it won't premiere until next year, the audition tour kicks off next week.

For folks from the Panhandle, there are several chances to audition without having to travel too far.

The first opportunity for Panhandle hopefuls is on Friday, Aug. 31 in Old Town Albuquerque. If folks miss that, they can go to Plano on Sept. 3, Houston on Sept. 4, or on Thursday Sept. 6, Austin or Oklahoma City.

On Friday, we invited folks to come by Palace Coffee at 34th and Coulter to drink some coffee, hang out and sing for us. We were looking to get a little preview of what they hope will wow the American Idol judges.

Crystal Chagoya, is one Amarillo hopeful who came by. She will join thousands of others this audition season by going before the judges and singing their hearts outs with the hope of making the live shows.

You may have heard Chagoya sing before. Recently she's been performing at open mic nights around town. Singing has always been a passion of hers and after years of people telling her she should go and audition, she is finally listening.

"I think I am finally going to give it a shot. I've gotten to a point in my age where I'm like it's not going to come to my door. I need to go out and get it before I get any older," said Chagoya.

For those who can't make the live auditions, there is also an option to submit an online audition.
