After responding to reports of an explosion at the Potter-Randall Appraisal District offices, firefighters discovered high levels of hydrogen sulfide.

According to the Amarillo Fire Department, at about 11:10 a.m., Amarillo Fire Dispatch received a report of an explosion at the Potter Randall Appraisal District. Upon arrival, crews discovered moderate amounts of smoke throughout the building.

Employees reported hearing a loud explosion and then smoke coming from the restroom area.

Everyone had exited the building without any injuries. Firefighters searched the building but did not find any fire.

During their search, crews did find high levels of hydrogen sulfide detected on monitoring equipment. Hydrogen sulfide is a dangerous gas commonly found in sewers.

After not being able to determine the source of the gas, AFD's Hazardous Materials Team was called to the scene. The Hazmat Team arrived and monitored the building with more specific monitoring equipment, however, they were unable to determine the cause of the explosion or the source of the gas.
