Early morning accident leaves two dead and one in critical condition
AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) —
Two women are dead and a third is in the hospital after an early morning vehicle accident.
The Amarillo Police Department was dispatched to a single car accident in the 2100 block of Interstate 27 at 2:12 a.m. on Oct. 7. Speed, alcohol, and no seat belts are contributing factors in the crash.
A 2014 Infiniti four door was traveling northbound at a high rate speed, left the roadway, struck a guard rail, and then spun into a tree. The driver was Saul Martinez, a 25-year-old male from Amarillo.
Two passengers in the vehicle died on scene as a result of injuries received in the crash. They have been identified as Diana Munoz, a 23-year-old female, and Michaela Ortiz, a 26-year-old female. Both of the victims are from Amarillo.
A third passenger, a 23-year-old whose identity has not been released, was taken to a local area hospital with life threatening injuries.
Martinez was taken to a local area hospital for non-life threatening injuries. He was later booked into the Potter County Detention Center on two counts of Intoxicated Manslaughter and one count of Intoxicated Assault.
The incident is being investigated by the Traffic Investigation Squad of the Amarillo Police Department.
APD wants to remind folks that alcohol related accidents are completely avoidable. According to a statement on Facebook, "There are many ride services in town that can be used instead of getting behind the wheel after drinking alcohol. These are two more loves that could have been saved for $15-20."
