"An Amarillo citizen has failed this animal," said Amarillo Animal Management and Welfare in a Facebook post regarding a dog that was left dead outside the Amarillo-Panhandle Humane Society.

The APHS Rescue Coordination Team arrived at the shelter early Wednesday morning for the first ever feline-only rescue transport. However, AAM&W said when the team arrived, they came upon a dumped animal that was already dead.

AAM&W said it was clear that the animal suffered trauma wounds which may have lead to its death. But there was no evidence of care rendered. Instead, AAM&W said the dog was discarded on their sidewalk "like a piece of trash."

"When unfortunate accidents happen and animals are hurt we have a community full of amazing veterinarians which could have helped this animal," AAM&W said.

AAM&W asks people who have an injured animal to "please seek treatment" from a local professional. They said if the animal has died, people are asked to use the deceased animal depository instead of throwing the animal on the sidewalk as if they are trash.

The deceased animal depository is well lit and located on the north side of the facility.
