The Bell Street overpass at Interstate 40 opened to traffic early Thursday evening following an accelerated construction plan that began July 28, 2017, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

The bridge was completely shut down with traffic detoured to the frontage roads to help accommodate the construction timeline.

The bridge reopened with two lanes of southbound traffic, the center turn lane, and one northbound lane. This traffic pattern will remain in place while construction of the eastbound turnaround bridge takes place, which is not part of the accelerated construction plan.

The Bell Street bridge reconstruction project is one of several taking place along I-40 to address aging infrastructure and to accommodate semi-truck traffic that is oversized and/or overweight.

The Bell Street bridge was first constructed in 1969.

As construction crews finish working in the area, travelers are reminded to slow down, pay attention in construction zones and be aware of the safety of construction workers.
