Amarillo Zoo to celebrate World Lion Day Saturday

A World Lion Day celebration will be held at the Amarillo Zoo this weekend, with learning and fun for the entire family.

On Saturday, Aug. 11, guests will be able to learn about lions and the problems that they are facing in their natural habitat, including habitat loss, prey loss, human-wildlife conflict, unsustainable trophy hunting practices, poaching, disease and inbreeding.

Activities included in the World Lion Day celebration are:

  • Listening to lion keeper chats
  • Watching a special enrichment activity at 10:30 a.m.
  • Taking selfies at the "I Love Lions" photo wall
  • Face painting
  • Comparing hand-prints with a lion's paw print in an art activity
  • Pledging to do your part in the support for lions and the protection of their habitat

World Lion Day will occur from 9:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday. The lion's will be off exhibit until the enrichment activity, starting at 10:30 a.m.

Admission is:

  • Adults (13-61): $4
  • Seniors (62 and up): $3
  • Children (3-12): $2
  • Two and under receive free admission
