EXTENDED FORECAST - It is a frigid morning out there for late March Many have already settled below freezing this morning with wind chills beginning to tumble into the teens for the northern panhandles. Take that extra layer with you as you'll likely want it when outside during the AM hours. We are tracking our next weather maker for later this week on Thursday and Friday. A vigorous upper-level low will track across the Northern Plains leaving us predominantly dry just very windy. This unfortunately will likely lead to critical fire conditions for a large chunk of the High Plains as winds ramp up and humidity values plummet. On Friday, another surface low will develop in southeast Colorado and increase winds significantly. Winds may become sustained at 30-40 mph with higher gusts possible. This will likely lead to widespread fire conditions yet again. Looking ahead into next week, Tuesday could be another active day where winds become a nuisance but this is still a week away.

Looking ahead into April, we may get stuck in a two or three week period that is very La Nina-like due to some small scale oscillations working in tandem to keep us dry but this should be short-lived for the overall spring pattern as we continue to see the eastern Pacific sea surface temperatures warm up. Confidence is increasing that at least normal precipitation chances will persist through much of the late spring and summer.
