Our Town Dumas: Booming Economy gains National attention

The City of Dumas economy is booming.

The city is now ranked the 52nd best economy of 536 Micropolitan cities by POLICOM.

A Micropolitan is an urbanized city with a population of at least 10,000 but less than 50,000 and must be at least one county.

Dumas was ranked 136th last year and has now made an 84 position jump.

Dumas EDC officials attribute this growth to aggressive recruitment and community involvement.

"We think outside the box and we look at everything with an economic value. If there??s a value to the community for a particular program or business or activity, we're not afraid to go after it,?? says Mike Running with the Dumas EDC.

Running said more than 10 new businesses came to the city last year. The most popular businesses remain to be agriculture and wind energy, Running said.

The city has seen both commercial and local business growth over the past 6 years. The Dumas EDC successfully recruited and assisted 35 new businesses.

??We??ve worked really hard to promote Dumas and bring these businesses to Dumas because it??s a great place to live.?? said Dumas Mayor, Pat Sims.

The city is also planning to host the filming of a movie and hire local talent for the job.

Mayor Sims said he believes the city??s population will reach 20,000 or above in the next 10 years.

??I think it??s just a testimony to what a community can do when they come together,?? said Running.
