Panhandle Spirit: Guys with Ties

They're trying something new at Bushland Middle School this year.

It's a simple thing, but so far, it's been a big hit all around, from the kids to their teachers and their parents.

It’s called Guys with Ties. The class of 6th-grade boys get together in the cafeteria before school, led by Assistant Principal Mark Reasor, and learn about etiquette, manners, social skills and more, in an effort to teach leadership and build self-esteem. It includes taking pride in your appearance.

“I've only worn clip-on ties, and it helps you. It boosts your self-confidence," said Riley McElroy.

Each session features a different type of social skill.

“We learned how to shake hands, (make) eye contact. We just learned today to hold the door, and when to hold the door for someone, and then, dress for success," said Ty Boyett.

Reasor said he researched other schools that have similar programs and saw an educational gap that needed to be filled.

“We're guilty of assuming that a kid has a social skill that we've never taken the time to address, and then when they don't model it, then we get upset with them. So, that's on us. So, we're proud to fill that role like a lot of other schools are," Reasor said.

Reasor and the boys say they've already seen an improvement, not just among the group, but throughout the school, and even at home.

"My parents love it. My dad's a big believer in dress for success and to have good manners and to be a gentleman," Boyett said.

"If it continues to progress like it has, and the kids show the behaviors, and enjoy it and continue to participate in it, then we're pretty sure it's going to be a good long term plan and part of Bushland Middle School," Reasor said.
