WT Volleyball set for LSC play
Mon, 16 Sep 2013 21:16:29 GMT — The #15 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M will open-up their 2013 Lone Star Conference schedule on Tuesday night as they travel to Wichita Falls, Texas to face-off with the rival Mustangs of Midwestern State at D.L. Ligon Coliseum with first serve set for 7 p.m.
#15 WEST TEXAS A&M - The #15 Lady Buffs look to rebound from a tough Colorado Premiere Tournament that saw WT go 1-3 with losses to then #1 Tampa, #21 Regis and Florida Southern and a win against Adams State. The Lady Buffs played 18 sets over the weekend as they went the 1-1 in matches that went a full five sets (Regis, Adams State). WT will look to start off the 2013 Lone Star Conference on a high note as they travel to D.L. Ligon Coliseum to face-off with the rival Mustangs of Midwestern State.
MIDWESTERN STATE - The Mustangs have started off the 2013 season strong as they enter the week with a 7-1 overall record, MSU went 3-1 at this past weekendâ??s Heartland/LSC Crossover in Lubbock, Texas as they fell to St. Maryâ??s in the opener followed by wins against UT-Permain Basin, Texas A&M-International and Lubbock Christian. MSU is led by 10th year head coach Venera Flores-Stafford. Leading the way for the Mustangs on the court are sophomore right-side Caitlin Wallace with a team leading 84 kills while teammate Sarah Rosinke leads the team with 183 assists to average 6.54 per set.
HIGHWAY 287 CHALLENGE CUP - The Lady Buffs and Mustangs will not only start their 2013 Lone Star Conference schedules on Tuesday night in Wichita Falls, the two teams will also begin the institutional rivalry competition known as the Highway 287 Challenge Cup. The point based competition will take place throughout the year and award a designated amount of points to the winning institution in all contest with postseason games carrying an additional amount of awarded points. Sports included in the challenge are: volleyball, football, womenâ??s soccer, menâ??s soccer, womenâ??s basketball, menâ??s basketball and softball. Womenâ??s cross country, menâ??s golf and womenâ??s golf will also be counted in the point total but only during the LSC Championships.
THE SERIES - The Lady Buffs are a perfect 26-0 all-time against Midwestern State including a pair of wins last season by West Texas A&M. WT swept past the Mustangs at D.L. Ligon Coliseum by scores of 30-28, 25-19, 25-19.

FAMILIAR FACES - Due to numerous preseason injuries, WT head coach Jason Skoch has added two players to the 2013 roster and Lady Buff fans may recognize the familiar faces. #25 Kirsten McCowan played for the Lady Buffs during her true-freshman season, the local product from Tascosa HS was a member of WTâ??s National Runner-Up team in 2009 before turning her attention to the WT Track & Field team. Ashley Davis also returns to the court for the Lady Buffs after what looked to be a career ending injury, the Randall HS product returns for her senior season after playing sparingly in 2012 due to injury. Davis was an AVCA 3rd Team All-American selection for the Lady Buffs in 2011 while picking up LSC Co-Offensive Player of the Year honors as well as being named the LSC Tournament MVP.
