WT Volleyball moves up in poll

After opening up their 2013 season with a perfect 5-0 record, the Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M have moved up to #9 in the newest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II Top 25 Poll announced by the organizationâ??s headquarters in Lexington, Kentucky on Monday afternoon.

The Lady Buffs started off the season last Thursday with a sweep of CSU-Pueblo followed by wins against UT-Permian Basin, Western State Colorado University, Lubbock Christian and UC-Colorado Springs to claim the BritKare Lady Buff Classic Title. WTâ??s Lauren Britten was named the Tournament MVP while teammates Halie Harton and Laura Iwuchukwu were named to the All-Tournament team.

Previous #1 Concordia St. Paul went 4-1 at their home tournament with a four set loss to then #20 Wayne State (Neb.) to fall to #4 this week. The Spartans of the University of Tampa overtake the top spot after a 4-0 performance at the Terrace Hotel Classic hosted by Florida Southern.

Fellow Lone Star Conference member Angelo State moved up four spots to #11 following a 4-0 showing at the ASU Invitational with wins over Dallas Baptist, CSU-Pueblo, Colorado Mesa and Arkansas Fort Smith.

The Lady Buffs will head to the Regis Fieldhouse in Denver, Colorado this weekend as they defend their 2012 Colorado Premiere Championship starting on Friday afternoon with a showdown against #1 Tampa at 1 p.m. CT immediately followed by a matchup with #21 Regis at 4:30 p.m. CT. Saturdayâ??s matchups will be decided by pool play on Friday.
