The number one ranked Wellington Skyrockets lived up to their billing today in the UIL Class 1A Division II state championship football game.
Wellington considered the underdog by most state writers going into the game against Falls City. The Beavers allowing just 7 points a game this season thru 14 games and most of the points came in a semi-final win over Tenaha, allowing 34.
Wellington fell behind early 6-0 but then scored the next 42 points in the game cruising to a 42-20 win, capturing the schools first football championship. Running back Terry Gilbreath earned player of the game honors, rushing for 183 yds and 2 td's,he also caught one td pass and had an interception on defense.
Wellington finishes the season with a 14-0 record and is the first school from the Pro News Seven viewing area since 2008 to win a football title.
