Mayfield, a true freshman preferred walk-on from Lake Travis, became the first true freshman walk-on quarterback to lead a BCS school in a season opener. He shredded the Mustang defense for 413 yards and four touchdowns becoming the fifth Red Raider to pass for 400-plus yards and throw for four TD passes in their first game. Mayfield completed 43-of-60 passes and that set a new school record for the most completions by a Tech signal caller in a career debut.
He is the first freshman quarterback at Texas Tech to earn a Big 12 Player of the Week honor in his debut following none other than current head coach Kliff Kingsbury. Kingsbury earned the honor on Nov. 22, 1999, following his first career start where he led the Red Raiders to a 38-28 win over the Oklahoma Sooners.
Mayfield becomes the first Tech player to win the Big 12 weekly honor in the first week of the season since Carlos Francis did so in Mike Leachâ??s coaching debut against New Mexico in 2000. He is also the first freshman quarterback to win the award since Nebraskaâ??s Taylor Martinez on Oct. 11, 2010.
Mayfield and the Red Raiders face the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks on Saturday evening at Jones AT&T Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. Season Tickets are available for $149 while individual seats are priced at $45. To purchase tickets, log on to texastech.com/tickets or call 806-742-TECH.
