Late-Inning Rally Sparks No. 4 Buffs to Series Split at No. 8 Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 4 West Texas A&M baseball team plated five runs over the final two innings for a thrilling, 8-6, come-from-behind win at No. 8 Angelo State Sunday afternoon to earn the four-game series split in a key regional, non-conference series.

Both teams finished the series at 18-4 as the Buffs trailed 6-3 heading into the final three innings prior to the rally. WT had eight runs on 15 hits with one error, while ASU totaled six runs on 13 hits with two miscues. WT junior Bodie Bryan paced the Buffs going three for four with two runs scored and four RBI, while three other Buffs each had two hits. Bryan belted his third home run of the season, while WT hit six doubles in the game. Five different Rams had two hits each in the game.

After struggling in the first three games from the plate, the Buffs regained the offensive prowess in the finale as WT jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning. WT junior starter Noah Draper got out of big jams in the first and second innings as ASU left five runners stranded combined in the two frames. In the third, junior Nelson Paredes reached on a throwing error, followed by Bryan’s home run to left for a 2-0 lead.

The Rams erased the deficit in the fourth as two walks began the frame with senior Justin McAllister relieving Draper. A two RBI triple by Jonathan Soberanes tied the game at two. Elias Aguirre singled to right for a 3-2 lead and a Mitch Henshaw home run scored two more for a 5-2 lead.

The Buffs cut into the deficit in the sixth with a Paredes RBI double to center, but ASU pushed the lead back to three in the bottom of the frame as Matt Waller singled home Henshaw who triples moments before for a 6-3 lead.

Following a scoreless seventh, the Buffs scored four runs on four hits with an error in the eight as senior John Baiada singled to center to begin the inning. Senior Chad Brown doubled to left and junior Jimmy Cubillos reached on an error, plating the first run. Bryan doubled to left for two RBI and later scored on a ground out for a 7-6 lead. In the ninth, WT added the insurance run as Brown drove home a run, on a 2-2 count, with a single through the left side for an 8-6 lead.

WT junior pitcher Marshall Kasowski pitched the final two innings in relief, fanning the side in the ninth for his first save as a Buff and struck out four for the game.

Junior Tate Huebner (3-0) earned the win in relief going two innings, allowing four hits, one earned run with no walks and two strikeouts. Joe Hauser too the loss, falling to 1-1 on the year in two innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs.

The Buffs continue on the road next week as the open 2017 Lone Star Conference play with a four-game series at Eastern New Mexico, Mar. 24-26, in Portales, N.M.
