The Canyon High School Eagles are working to improve on a successful 2012 season that unfortunately ended with a first round playoff loss. But Eagles head coach Blake Bryant is the first to point out his young athletes are focused on the basics in 2013.
"We don't look too far ahead around here," said Bryant. "Our team is just trying to get better each day. We have some talented players to replace off last year's team, but we're looking forward to the challenge."
I was looking forward to my own challenge when visiting the Eagles and one of their recent practices. I was offered the opportunity to play defensive back and try to cover their top four receivers. One at a time.
The defensive back challenge never really played in my favor during the 10 minutes of one on one coverage. The Eagles decided three defensive stops (interception, deflection, or drop) over 10 pass patterns would be enough for me to win this Pitt's Sports Challenge. Unfortunately, it did not work out that way for me.
The Eagles had no trouble connecting on nine of their ten pass patterns for the easy Pitt's Sports Challenge win.
"You did alright," said Bryant. "You were within five and ten yards covering the guys."
Five and ten yards was not nearly good eough to seriously make waves in this competition. But, I guess, there is always next year.
