Hilltoppers outlast #7 Lady Buffs

The Hilltoppers of St. Edward's used a three run third inning and a stellar pitching performance in the circle to top the #7 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M, 5-1 on Friday night at Schaeffer Park in Canyon. The Lady Buffs fall to 43-12 on the season while the Hilltoppers move to 31-21.

"Give credit to St. Edward's for a great gameplan, we came out timid and it cost us" said WT head coach Kevin Blaskowski "We made some key defensive mistakes and didn't make any adjustments at the plate, now we've got to travel the long road to get to where we want to be."

The Hilltoppers threatened in the top of the second inning with runners on first and second with one out, but a groundball to Jessica Sipe at the hot corner turned into a double play to end the frame.

St. Edward's started off the scoring in the top of the third inning as Lauren Brode singled to left field with two outs for an RBI single followed by two runs scoring on a wild pitch for the 3-0 lead.

The Lady Buffs wasted away a chance to score in the bottom of the sixth inning with runners on second and third with no outs, registering three straight outs to end the inning.

St. Edward's added to their lead in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single to center that turned into a two run opportunity with a WT error to give SEU the 5-0 lead.

WT wouldn't go down without a fight as Alyssa Lemos drilled a full count pitch over the left center field fence with no outs to drive in Meghan Slattery but WT would register three outs over the next four batter to end the game, 5-2.

The Lady Buffs move into the loserĂ¢??s bracket to face off with the #11 Orediggers of Colorado School of Mines who fell to Angelo State, 13-0 in five innings earlier in the day. First pitch of the elimination game is set for 3:30 p.m. in Canyon.
