West Texas State Normal College was created in 1910.
Canyon City, as it was known then, had to compete with several other towns for the honor of creating it.
The state offered $50,000 to the town that gave the best offer.
One consideration was that Amarillo had saloons back then but Canyon was dry.
Dr. Marty Kuhlman, Professor of History at WTAMU says the state apparently didn't want their students drinking.
