WTAMU establishes military scholarship fund

For veterans, returning home after long or repeated deployments can be emotionally and financially draining. And now West Texas A&M University has a scholarship fund aimed at helping veterans further their education.

The Military Veteran Scholarship Fund is the brainchild of WT President Patrick J. O'Brien and student Nune Perez, a U.S. Navy veteran. Perez said he wanted to establish a campus network for veterans and also help those returning from service make an easier transition back into the civilian world.

"The numbers are really bleak nationally when it comes to veteran scholarships or veterans actually succeeding in college," says Perez. "The top three reasons were: financial burden, unable to re-acclimate themselves to civilian life, and post-traumatic stress disorder. And I thought, 'I can't really help much with PTSD other than just listen to my brethren. But a scholarship can definitely help.'''
