A woman was arrested in Wheeler County on May 6 for abandoning a child after the child was found in a car in a ditch near I-40.

According to Wheeler County Sheriff's Office, they received a call at about 3:30 a.m. in reference to a vehicle in a ditch with its lights on and no one around it. Two deputies located the car and found an infant crying in the back seat. The child was taken to the hospital for an evaluation.

The Sheriff and three deputies began searching to locate the driver of the vehicle. During the investigation, it was discovered that the car had stopped at a hotel in Shamrock at about 11 p.m. and left at around 1 a.m. The hotel cameras were reviewed and deputies attempted to get the driver's location using a cell phone number used to check in.

The Sheriff's Office then received another phone call about a female that was laying in grass on the side of the road near I-40 and Daberry Road, about three miles from the location of the car.

The woman was located and it was determined that she is the mother of the child found in the vehicle. She was arrested for abandoning a child in imminent danger.

The child was evaluated by the hospital and found to be in good health and released into the custody of Child Protective Services.
