T he annual Texas Peace Officer's "We Remember" Memorial Trek Across Texas kicked-off today in downtown Amarillo.
A group of police officers will be riding across the state to honor the memory of those who were killed in the line of duty. Amarillo Police Officer Mark Simmons is among the officers the group is riding to remember. Simmons was killed when his patrol car was rear-ended in 2005.
Honoring those fallen officers is the goal of the trek, Officer Steven Bazany said, "this is a simple way of showing them, hey, we are here, we care, we remember and they will never be forgotten."
A core group of eight officers from departments across Texas will end the ride in Austin on May 3rd where a candlelight vigil will be held for the officers. The group will stop in Dallas, Mount Pleasant, Atlanta, Jefferson, Carthage, Groveton, Huntsville, Livingston, Houston and San Antonio along the way.
