Wanted man arrested while burglarizing church

Juan Tovar was arrested after being recognized as wanted person.

Amarillo Police Department responded to a burglar alarm at Mount Olive Baptist Church on March 16 at about 4 p.m.

Upon arrival, officers began searching the grounds and found an unlocked door to a building separate from the main church building. Juan Tovar, 30, was found hiding in the building. Tovar claimed he was in the church to worship, but couldn't provide officers with the name of the church or preacher.

Officers then recognized Tovar as being a wanted person, and was arrested and booked into Potter County Detention Center on a charge of Burglary of a Building and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia as well as for several outstanding warrants, including Evading Arrest/Detention with previous conviction; a bond surrender warrant with an original charge of Evading Arrest/Detention; a bond surrender warrant for Violation of a Protective Order; another bond surrender warrant for Assault Causing Bodily Injury to a Family Member; a Randall County warrant for bond surrender with an original charge of Possession of a Controlled Substance.
