UPDATE: "Person of Interest" in Portales homicide charged with murder
PORTALES, N.M. (KVII) —
The Eastern New Mexico News reports a 34-year-old man Portales police initially described as a “person of interest” in a homicide has been charged with murder and is in custody.
Court records show Gerardo Marquez is accused of shooting Erika Zamorano, who was found dead about 9:45 p.m. Thursday in a home at 929 E. Second St. in Portales.
Records show Marquez was booked into the Curry County Adult Detention Center at 1:04 p.m. Friday. He was initially charged with battery upon a peace officer and resisting, evading or obstructing an officer.
The murder warrant was filed in Roosevelt County’s Magistrate Court sometime Friday.
Records show a cousin of Marquez told police that on Thursday morning, he saw Marquez enter the residence where Zamorano was later found dead.
The witness “heard yelling and a single boom, later explained as a possible gunshot,” the record shows.
Portales police were called to the residence at 9:43 p.m. Thursday, where Zamorano was found dead with a gunshot over her left eye.
