Treat troops to leftover Halloween treats

If your kids collected more than their fair share of Halloween goodies, troops overseas would be happy to take the treats off their hands.

Kool Smiles Dentistry is working to make sure the men and women overseas get to satisfy their sweet tooth. Leftover candy can be dropped off at the office located at 2210 Bell St. In exchange for 25 pieces of candy, kids can choose a toy. And if they want to take it one step further, kids can donate the toy back to Kool Smiles and it will be sent to the child of a soldier.

"It's really important that we remember the troops overseas," Kool Smiles Office Manager KC Estes said. "And sometimes children feel that they don't have anything to do with that, and this gives them the chance to get involved in that. Plus, soldiers really do appreciate it. When they get a care package like this, it really helps them kind of put up with the hard times."

Kool Smiles will be accepting candy donations until 6 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday.

America Supports You Texas is also collecting candy to go inside Care Boxes for the Troops. Those donations can be dropped off at The People's Federal Credit Union location on Hillside or any Schlotzsky's location in Amarillo.

Care Box Coordinator Luan Martin said the candy will not only go to the soldiers, but also to their interpreters and the children in Afghanistan.

"If we can just plant a seed that the American soldier is the one that gave them candy, it might plant a seed not to be a terrorist in the future."

Other items are being accepted for the care boxes- Martin encouraged anyone interested in donating to contact her at 806-433-1862.
