GALVESTON, Texas (AP) - The capital murder trial of a Houston man accused of killing a 79-year-old woman outside a Southeast Texas courthouse is getting underway. Bartholomew Granger faces life in prison or the death penalty if he's convicted in the March 2012 death of Minnie Sebolt. Attorneys are scheduled to give opening statements today in Galveston.
SHERMAN, Texas (AP) - Authorities have identified a 28-year-old man who allegedly struck and killed a North Texas sheriff's deputy as he directed traffic. The Grayson County Sheriff's Office has arrested Ricky Stanley of Whitesboro in connection with Saturday's incident. Sheriff's Deputy Chad Christian Key was struck and killed while working near U.S. Highway 82 east of Sherman.
WEST, Texas (AP) - More families that had been kept away from their houses since last week's deadly fertilizer plant explosion are being allowed to return to their homes. Steve Vanek, the mayor pro tem in the town of West, announced yesterday that additional residents were being allowed to return. The first group of residents went back on Saturday.
TYLER, Texas (AP) - Former Tyler Morning Telegraph publisher Calvin Nelson Clyde Jr. has died at the age of 92. Clyde died yesterday in the East Texas community. The Telegraph reports Clyde entered journalism as a reporter in 1937. He later was named president of the Texas Daily Newspaper Association.
