HALTOM CITY, Texas (AP) - State Senator Wendy Davis has declared her candidacy for governor of Texas. Attorney General Greg Abbott is the front-runner for the Republican nomination. He's raised $25 million. Davis has a little over $1 million. Republican Governor Rick Perry has chosen not to seek re-election.
GALVESTON, Texas (AP) - A federal appeals court has overturned a lower-court ruling that blocked Texas from enforcing new restrictions on volunteer voter registrars. National non-partisan group Voting for America had argued the laws made it harder to register voters. The group complained that the new laws unconstitutionally restricted voter registration drives.
MCCAMEY, Texas (AP) - A 50-year-old suspect has been charged with capital murder in the fatal shooting of a West Texas sheriff's deputy. Gary David Green has been charged in the shooting. He remains hospitalized in critical condition in Odessa with multiple gunshot wounds received in the shootout. Bond is set at $1 million.
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - A former West Texas sheriff's deputy has pleaded guilty to involvement in a cocaine distribution conspiracy. Former Yoakum County deputy Inoe R. Valdez pleaded guilty in Lubbock to unlawful use of a communication facility. Valdez acknowledged selling about 1.5 pounds of cocaine and that he stopped when he learned he was under investigation.
