AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Cleanup work gets underway in earnest a day after flash floods across Central Texas killed two men and prompted dozens of emergency rescues. Storms in the Austin area left behind up to 13 inches of rain. The bad weather that started late Wednesday and continued through yesterday triggered flash floods in a region that since 2011 has had drought.

HOUSTON (AP) - Houston police say a girl who was out trick-or-treating has died after darting into a street and being struck by a vehicle. Investigators say the girl apparently ran ahead of some family members and stepped into the path of the vehicle. Houston police say the driver remained at the scene following the accident.

TYLER, Texas (AP) - Investigators say a man in East Texas has suffered severe burns after his Halloween costume caught fire. Authorities say crews were dispatched to a Tyler home about a person on fire. Bystanders help put out the blaze. The victim was transported to a Tyler hospital then moved to a burn unit in Dallas.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) - More than a dozen former Texas prison guards have been sentenced over a racketeering and smuggling ring involving drugs and cellphones slipped to inmates. Prosecutors say all pleaded guilty this week to charges linked to racketeering, conspiracy or drugs at the McConnell Unit in Beeville. The ex-guards received sentences ranging from probation to 28 months behind bars.
