AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - About 100 pets displaced in recent Central Texas flooding are being cared for by the Austin Humane Society as recovery efforts continue. Hanes says most of the 100 or so rescued animals are dogs, along with a few cats and some bunnies. Authorities say at least five people were killed in the flooding.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Voters in parts of north Austin and eastern Travis County will decide today who will replace state Representative Mark Strama. Vying for the seat are Democrats Jade Chang Sheppard, Celia Israel and Rico Reyes. The lone Republican is Mike VanDeWalle. Strama resigned in June to lead Austin's Google Fiber project.
DENTON, Texas (AP) - A jury has deadlocked in the case of a North Texas woman charged with starting a 2010 house fire that killed her boyfriend's 2-year-old son. Toni Barnett was charged with manslaughter, aggravated assault and arson over the August 2010 blaze in Carrollton that claimed the life of Braylen Smalls. Investigators say Barnett and the boy's father argued prior to the fire.
BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) - A South Texas man has been convicted of a slaying in which the victim was stabbed more than a dozen times after the alleged theft of a car radio. Robert John Anthony Martinez faces up to 99 years in prison. The Cameron County jury previously convicted Martinez in last November's killing of Angel Perez.
