Summer camp options for Amarillo residents

While kids are counting down the days until their summer break, parents may have some difficulty trying to figure out what they are going to do to keep their kids busy. Luckily, there are many summer camps in Amarillo to help keep their kids productive.

Schools like Amarillo High School offer cluster summer camps. Each sport within the school offers a camp. While all kids are welcomed, these camps cater to kids involved in athletics.

â??Itâ??s more skilled specific and directed,â?? said Amarillo High coach Mel Maxfield. â??Itâ??s a skilled specific sports specific program that we run.â??

Camps range from $40-$60 depending on the sport.

For girls from elementary school all the way to high school can spend a few days camping outdoors with the Girls Scout summer program.

Activities include swimming, archery, ropes, horseback riding, arts and craft and more. Prices range anywhere from $135-$340, depending on how long the girl stays.

Getting the girls to learn how to live in the outdoors, appreciating the environment and how to take care of it is what they hope girls gain from the camp said Girls Scout Camp Director, Natalie Stephenson.

Parents with kids either living or going to school in the 79107 zip code can keep their kids busy without even opening their wallets. The North YMCA is offering free summer camp to those kids from 10 to 17-year-olds with their YES program.

â??We want them focused on something and the YES program is perfect,â?? said YES Director, KT Witten. â??The YMCA is a great place for them to be this summer.â??

The North YMCA also offers Daycare for children 2-8 years-old. Registration is $50 and the cost of their services is $115 per week.

If you are not in that area but are still looking for a reasonably priced summer camp, the Maverick Boys and Girls Club will be keeping their d

oors open all summer for kids.

This year kids will have different themes including Super Science, Amazing Arts and Safari.

â??Itâ??s a mix between fun and trying something new. Thatâ??s really what we want them to go away with,â?? said Program Director, Alise Craig. â??We want them to come here and just have a great time here, but also sneak in a little bit of that learning.â??

The Maverick Boys and Girls Club summer camp cost $40 per month per child. The price includes everything like field trips and meals from Kids Café for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They offer camp for kids 6-18 from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
