State wants 2013 school finance ruling reversed

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas is asking that a judge overturn his 2013 ruling that state public education funding is inadequate and unevenly distributed among school districts.
State District Judge John Dietz's decision came after more than 600 school districts statewide sued in response to the Legislature's cutting $5.4 billion in funding to classrooms in 2011.
But last year, lawmakers restored more than $3.4 billion while easing high school graduation standards.
Dietz reopened the case to hear evidence on how that might affect his initial decision.
Assistant Texas Attorney General Shelly Dahlberg presented closing arguments Friday. She said schools have received "most of what they asked for" during the last legislative session, but would have Dietz believe it doesn't matter.
Dietz plans to issue a final ruling on the full case next month.
