The city animal shelter is overflowing with dogs that have escaped from their homes.
With all the fireworks and crowds, some animals got spooked and made their escape.
"We even had a lady call that a dog had jumped off her mothers lap and ran." said Jena McFall, Amarillo-Panhandle Humane Society .
McFall says that with all the fireworks and barbecues and that people are making a lot of commotion the dogs get scared or it makes them anxious.
While the impound may have rabbits, hamsters and cats in the front public display area and in the back rooms, they do tend to see a lot of dogs this time of year.
McFall said the Humane Society has had as many calls from people looking for their lost dogs.
Some of the animals that are micro-chipped are easily reunited with owners. Some do come to the facility without collars.
If you are someone who is missing a pet or have a stray animal, you may need call or visit the Humane Society.
"They are open to 10 to 7. So if they have lost a pet you need to come look for it."
The Humane Society office is located at 3501 South Osage, Amarillo, Texas 79118, with hours Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.
