Short Dalhart underpass may be remedied

The infamous underpass in Dalhart is a step closer to getting fixed.

The bridge is only 13 feet, 7 inches and some rigs have gotten stuck under there.

Union Pacific owns the bridge and they havenâ??t had a problem, so at first the idea was to build a bridge over the railroad.

Tx-DOT paid for a consultant to take a look at the problem and theyâ??ve come up with a plan.

Theyâ??ll go under the underpass but add two feet clearance.

James Stroud, Dalhart City Manager says, "Itâ??s been such an ordeal dealing with two railroads. You canâ??t shut them down. Youâ??re talking a million dollar an hour for the railroad."

The new plan is estimated to cost $6-million, rather than the $20-million it would cost to go over the bridge.

They say theyâ??ll now go after the funding.

Theyâ??ve been in contact with Senator Kel Seligerâ??s and Representative John Smitheeâ??s offices.
