Some state lawmakers were in Amarillo on Tuesday to participate in a Senate Committee meeting at the Region 16 Education Service Center.
The meeting focused on transportation and homeland security issues that state leaders will be facing in the next legislative session early next year.
Senator Kel Seliger says the meetings are designed to canvas the entire state and let anyone sit in on the discussions.
"When we talk about homeland security, let's talk about the implications here of porous borders, what the state does, if the federal government does an adequate job protecting the border, and then we get the drugs and violence that comes over here...and the state has to deal with that...that's why the DPS and the Texas Rangers are here today."
Tuesday's committee looked at disaster response, the environmental review process regarding transportation projects, and traffic congestion.
