School liaison officer arrested following criminal investigation

A former Amarillo Police Department officer is the subject of a criminal investigation being conducted by the Randall County Sheriff's Office. That officer is Donald Ray Sanders, Jr.

According to Danny Alexander with the Randall County Sheriff's Office, Sanders has been arrested and being held for a complaint of a sexual misconduct with a minor. According to the Amarillo Police Department, the alleged criminal misconduct occurred outside city limits. The allegation that the department is aware of involved off-duty, personal conduct by the officer.

Upon hearing of the allegations, Sanders was immediately placed on administrative leave pending outcome of the investigation, and the APD initiated an internal investigation. Officials say that investigation disclosed information sufficient to justify termination of Sanders, which happened Monday, September 16th. Sanders was a liaison officer at a local high school, however, Amarillo Police officials say this incident is not connected to his assignment at the school.

Sanders is being held on a $75,000 bond.

Sanders had been with the Amarillo Police Department is August of 2003.
