The Texas Panhandle Chapter of the American Red Cross opened warming centers in two locations during Saturday's winter storm.
At the request of Amarillo Emergency Management, Trinity Baptist Church in Amarillo was opened to help those who wished to get off the dangerous roads.
Another shelter was opened in Dalhart. Steve Pair with the Red Cross says that about 40 people stayed the night due to highway closures.
The Red Cross provides its volunteers with training to learn how to run a shelter during these circumstances.
"This is already our second big storm and yesterday was only the first day of winter. We've got four full months of potentially snowy, icy dangerous days ahead so what we always need is volunteers who are willing to help serve the communities and serve those in need," Pair said.
