Officers were sent on quite a chase Wednesday afternoon trying to stop a stolen vehicle. It all started around noon, when COPPS officers spotted a stolen Ford pickup in a parking lot near 11th and Grand. As officers were setting up surveillance, 3 men hopped in the pickup and left. At this time officers began chasing the stolen truck, however they quickly called off the pursuit because the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed through a residential area.
A short time later, officers were told that 2 male subjects had jumped out of the truck and were now on foot in the neighborhood. Both of these men were later caught and taken into custody. Rosalio Jermiah Chacon, 30, of Amarillo, was arrested for evading arrest/detention a class B misdemeanor. The other man was not booked and was released.
Meanwhile, the stolen pickup was involved in a wreck at 3rd and S. Grand. The suspect vehicle was going north bound in the south bound lanes through road construction, when it clipped two cars that were stopped in traffic. The truck then turned onto SE 3rd, and hit a Ford pickup. A witness followed the suspect's vehicle trying to get a tag number, the pickup then rammed that car forcing it off the road and into a light pole. Fortunately there were no injuries in any of the wrecks.
A short time later witnesses reported seeing the stolen vehicle abandoned near 12th and Seminole and that the driver was last seen getting into another vehicle.
The investigation is ongoing as officers attempt to find the driver of the stolen truck. Additional arrest/charges are pending.
