Police investigate homicide after fight leads to death of 53-year-old man

Amarillo police are continuing their investigation into an assault that officers believe led to the death of a 53-year-old man.

According to police, officers were sent to a physical fight at a home in 7800- block of Cervin Drive on Sunday, July 30. Officers interviewed people at the home and found the resident, Joseph Guzman, had been injured in an altercation that happened inside the home. He was found unconscious in the garage area and was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The other adults that had been inside the home during the fight were interviewed by officers and released pending additional investigation.

APD's Special Crimes Unit took over the investigation on Tuesday, August 8, as Guzman died in the hospital just after 5 a.m.

Investigators went back to the home on Cervin Drive to follow up on their investigation. No one has been arrested yet in this case.

Just of the Peace Debbie Horn has ordered an autopsy for Guzman.
