Police arrest felon following armed carjacking in Walmart parking lot
AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) —
A 23-year-old man was arrested following an armed robbery in the parking lot of a South Amarillo Walmart in Texas.
Amarillo police said officers were sent to a personal robbery in the parking lot of the Walmart at 4215 S. Georgia St. just after 10 p.m. on Sunday.
When officers got to the scene, they learned the victim was in his vehicle in the parking lot waiting for someone when three men approached him. The suspects had dark clothing and their faces were covered with some type of mask.
APD said one of the suspects, later identified as Joseph Noel Cortez, approached the driver's side window, pointed a gun at the victim, demanded the vehicle and threatened to kill the victim. The driver got out of the 2003 Dodge pickup, the suspect got into the vehicle and drove away. Police said the two other suspects left in another vehicle.
According to police, a witness told officers the vehicle was in the area of 36th Avenue and Polk Street. An officer saw the Cortez running from the area and took him into custody. He had a .380 caliber handgun in his waistband when he was arrested.
Police said Cortez was booked into the Randall County Jail for Aggravated Robbery, Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon and Unlawfully Carrying a Weapon.
APD said investigators are still trying to identify the other two suspects.
