Phase 1 construction at Sunray ISD is completed

Sunray High School students are starting their year off with a new gym. It's the first of two construction phases made possible with the passing of a $7.3 million dollar bond in May of 2011.

Pronews 7's Lindsey Stiner visited the construction zone back in November, then just the shell of the new gym was being laid. On August 15th, it was deemed completed, just in time for school to start.

"The gym we designed it and built it for a multiple purpose building. We were able to have graduation in May, so it was very exciting. It's the first time we've ever had air conditioning for our graduation ceremony," said Sunray Independent School District Superintendent, Glen Waldo.

For a few of the varsity basketball girls, who just happened to be at the gym, they said they're excited to be playing their senior year in the new gym.

"I think its pretty awesome. I'm excited to be the first group of people to play in it as my last year and, I'm excited for it," said Sunray High School Senior, Karsen Anderson.

But it's not just a new gym, there's also new locker rooms, a concession stand and commons area. However, students at both the high school and middle school will have to walk around a construction zone as Phase Two gets underway.

"We started phase two which is the science labs, the new administration building at the high school. And new library/media center, and we have started that construction at the May this past summer," said Waldo.

There will also be upgrades made in the home economics rooms and added security.

"There's going to be a new administration building we added that to help with security. Parents and community members will have to come through the office to gain access to the campus," said Waldo.

Waldo added that Phase Two construction is expected to be completed by the end of this upcoming school year.

Here's how the anticipated cost of the construction has been broken down according to the Sunray Independent School District.
