Pampa truck driver killed in fiery accident

A tractor trailer exploded when it jumped the guard rails and crashed, killing a Pampa truck driver.


he driver of a tractor trailer was killed in an explosion caused by a wreck along the Leon River Bridge Tuesday night.

The Texas Department of Public safety identified the driver as Tracy Lee Meeks, 69, of Pampa, Texas.

Emergency responders were called to Highway 36, five miles East of Temple, over Lake Belton about a tractor trailer that had exploded and was burning on the river cement embankment.

Fire authorities from the Moffat Fire Department said that the fire was under control in 30 minutes.

TxDOT and Moffet Hazmat crews cleaned that spilled contents of the trailer that were strewn along the highway, causing traffic to slow.

Meeks was traveling westbound when the vehicle struck a concrete wall on the bridge. The vehicle jumped the guard rails, over turning and exploded into flames, killing Meeks inside the cab.

It is unknown what caused the vehicle to crash. DPS is continuing an accident investigation.

It is unknown if Meeks was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.
