      Ongoing Xcel Energy scam reported

      Area residents are warned against providing credit/debit information to a caller claiming to be with Xcel Energy because of an ongoing scam.

      T he Amarillo Police Department has been contacted by several residents that are reporting a telephone scam using Xcel Energy's name.

      The criminals contact businesses and homes and claims to be from Xcel. They tell the intended victim that their account is overdue, and that power will be turned off immediately if they don't pay by providing bank or credit card information.

      Xcel Energy is aware of this and has posted warnings about this scam as far back as 2010. The caller is not a representative of their company.

      Xcel Energy provides written notice of overdue accounts, never through an initial telephone contact.

      If someone attempts to obtain personal or bank information from you, hang up. It's NOT necessary to call Xcel if you did not provide information.

      If you have concerns about your account, contact Xcel Energy at (800)895-4999.

      Business accounts can call (800)481-4700.

      It is not necessary to call APD unless the criminal caller has secured your personal bank or credit card information.

      If you have given information to this scammer, advise your bank or credit card company.
