One fatal in late night wreck along I-40

West bound I-40 shut down as traffic investigators deal with a fatal accident.

According to a release from the Amarillo police Traffic Investigator Sgt. Godfrey, police responded to a vehicle crash along West I-40 at about 11pm Wednesday night.

Officers found that a red Jeep Wrangler struck the rear of a red Chevy Cavalier that stopped in the outside lane, according to the release.

Witnessess, according to the release, said the Cavalier had a blown tire and was traveling slowly before coming to a stop along the interstate.

Joshua Todd Byars, 23, was identified as the driver of the Cavalier. Byars was transported to a local hospital were he succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the Wrangler was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

The scene of the accident shut down the two westbound lanes until investigators were able to work the scene.

Justice of the Peace Thomas Jones has ordered an autopsy.

Alcohol may be a factor in the accident. It is unknown if seat belts were worn by the deceased.

The Traffic investigation squad is still investigating the accident.
